Commuters who went to work in shirtsleeves Monday morning had to expect to be chilly on the way home as cold air swung into North Carolina after coating the central part of the nation and the Northeast with ice .The good news, however, is that moisture associated with the front was scheduled to come as rain during the day, well before freezing temperatures that were forecast to arrive overnight.Forecasters said the front would plow through the state from the northwest mountains to the southeast coast during the day. Asheville hit its high temperature for the day at 3 a.m., with 53 degrees. By noon, the temperature had dropped to 38 degrees.For the Triangle, the high temperature at Raleigh Durham International Airport was at midnight, when the thermometer read 63 degrees. At noon, the reading was 57 degrees at RDU and 58 at WRAL.Nationally, spring-like temperatures were only a memory Tuesday in parts of the Northeast in the wake of the storm that earlier had plastered the Midwest and Plains with a heavy shell of ice.

ADB urges East Asia trade deal
CEBU (PHILIPPINES): East Asia must work towards a full free-trade zone and take swift action to cut poverty, the head of the Asian Development Bank warned regional leaders on Monday. The region also needs to improve infrastructure and find common cause on coping with transnational woes like crime and disease if it wants to stay competitive in future, bank president Haruhiko Kuroda said. Speaking at the second annual East Asia Summit of 16 nations, Kuroda said the region had made progress on economic integration and recovered well from the Asian financial crisis a decade ago, but needed to do more. "Asia is home to 12 of the world's 15 tallest buildings, a testament to its ability to rapidly generate wealth. But it is also home to the world's largest slums," he said. "Unless prompt action is taken, the region may lose its competitive edge," he told a closed-door summit, according to a copy of his speech obtained by media.

WHILE school buses are a common sight in most countries, they are rarely seen on the road in the sultanate. Looking at the daily traffic congestion at nearly all schools, it is obvious that the majority of parents are shying away from taking up free school bus services provided by the respective schools.
Many do not realise that since 60 per cent of the country's workforce is from the government sector, time spent by a working parent sending or picking up their children from school does have an effect on national productivity.
Granted that there has been no conclusive study on how damaging the effect is, parents interviewed do admit that the school run from school to work to home and back to work is stressful.
