BJP casts slur on Home Secy's visit

Imphal, January 04: The basic purpose of the Union Home Secretary VK Duggal's visit to the State recently was not to review the law and order situation of the State but to work out poll strategy for the Congress party, charged BJP MLA M Bhorot.

Speaking to reporters at the BJP office today, Bhorot alleged that though the Home Secretary was on an official visit to review the law and order situation in the State, the real purpose of the visit was to work out strategies so that Congress candidates can win in the Assembly elections.

Taking serious note of the refusal of the Home Secretary to meet BJP representatives during his stay at Imphal, Bhorot construed that VK Duggal leaving Imphal after meeting only the Chief Minister without meeting leaders of other political parties was a clear indicator that his visit was basically to chalk out plans for the Congress party.

At home or at the Capitol, legislators lay down the law

The key to raising a large family with young children and working in the Legislature is organization, Assemblywoman Heidi Gansert of Reno says.

With an electronic calendar, the Republican assistant minority leader plots weekly schedules for her four kids -- ages 8 to 14. It gets complicated since all are involved in sports and required to play a musical instrument.

She then prints it and posts it on the refrigerator, so nobody misunderstands.

"During the session, I will post it every week so everybody knows what we are doing, so my husband knows and the kids know," said Gansert, 43. "I have tried to encourage my children to be very independent so they know what they are doing that day and they prepare things. I try to make sure they are responsible."

Gansert's Reno home is less than an hour away from the Legislature in Carson City -- so combining the role of raising young children with legislative duties may be easier than it is with similar-sized families in Southern Nevada, some said.

This clutter buster has come out of the closet

BLACKSBURG -- Lindsay Coleman has Lila Lamanna's business card in his wallet. It's a good bet he won't toss it.

Coleman, an avid collector who has owned Blacksburg's popular Maxwell's restaurant for decades, doesn't toss things lightly.

Coleman's extensive jazz collection with its records, instruments, autographs, books and memorabilia is just the tip of the iceberg. He also has artwork, tools and magazines dating to his college years.

Not that he's a pack rat. He doesn't like that term, preferring to think of himself as a connoisseur.

"I've got so many collections of different stuff, it amazes even me," he said. But he's been contemplating giving Lamanna a call.

"I'm certainly thinking about it. I need help getting organized."

Lamanna is just 26, a slight woman with freckles dotting the bridge of her nose.

Migrants miss out on refunds

The Press has been inundated with complaints about a failed Christchurch recruitment company that has left hundreds of potential migrants in the lurch.

New Brighton firm Stu Macann and Associates Ltd (SMA) ceased trading last month owing 229 potential migrants about $600,000 in fees.

The migrants paid the company a fee in exchange for the company finding them a job so they could apply for residency. They were promised the fee back if no job eventuated.

A new company, Skills New Zealand Ltd, has taken over SMA's website called newjobz. Skills New Zealand Ltd is managed by SMA director Keith Lightfoot and is owned by SMA director, Stu Macann.

The new company operates the website from the same premises in New Brighton with the same staff.

After a story about the failure appeared in the Press last week, the Commerce Commission has reopened an investigation into the company.
