Many people are trading in their commuter passes and cubicle life to work from home. After all, technological advancements enable remote access to servers, and just having e-mail and Internet access can provide workers all the tools they need to conduct business from a home office.
The appeal of working at home is very alluring to those who have sampled the benefits, particularly mothers or fathers who think this would be the ideal means to remaining in the workforce, while also caring for children. Many think at-home workers have it easy. Dont they have free reign to wake up late, remain in their pajamas and probably goof off more than they put in productive hours?
Thats how misinformed people view working from home, or telecommuting, as its often called. However, many home-based workers can attest that these statements couldnt be further from the truth.
Local couple specializes in making others' lives easier
If there is a task that needs to be done, from fixing a screen door to painting a room or cleaning a closet, they are more than willing to step in.
And they won't charge an arm and leg for their services.
The Iowa City couple has recently opened the business, Home Tender.
The idea behind the company is to help simplify the lives of others at an affordable price, said Celia Dunnington, 59.
"We want to be like friends and family that you can call on to do all kinds of things," she said. "We work with people who don't want to burst their budgets."
All throughout their married life, the two have worked to find ways to make things nice without pouring a lot of money into them, she said.
Though the two had worked in the corporate world for many years, last July they chose to say goodbye for the opportunity to work for themselves.

BONSALL ---- After spending years selling items such as window blinds and shutters and working with countless nationwide businesses, Mark Barone had an ambitious business idea ---- to create a window-coverings franchise before opening his first store.The longtime Fallbrook resident said that Today's Window Fashions, which he established in 1999, specializes in selling a variety of blinds, verticals, shades and shutters. The first franchise opened in 2000 in the Midwest, and now 32 franchises operate in 15 states. Barone's own store recently relocated from Fallbrook to Bonsall.
He and co-owner Armand Gagnon manage the corporate office for Today's Window Fashions, a company that allows franchise owners to work from home. It also benefits customers because demonstrations take place within their homes, and include a mobile display with eight samples of products.
