If mom's happy, the kids are, too

Many debate the merits of working versus stay-at-home moms. I've personally worn both hats and still can't completely decide what is right for me. This is the key point though for every mother, to decide what is right for her life and go out and get it. I think there are so many choices available for women today, and sometimes we want it all.

I come from a long line of working mothers. I loved my dad's mom, Gladys, the flapper turned dental assistant. She and my grandfather survived the Depression, and she remained active in the dental community well into her senior years. My maternal great-grandmother worked side by side with her husband in a store they owned. My own mother was trained and worked as a nurse in the 1950s, but after marrying my father and having four children in four years, she stayed home for a while.

Staying at home vs. working

Can we set aside the modern eugenics and black-and-white thinking for just a minute and recognize the beauty of diversity and difference that exists among people in the world? Also, can we appreciate that Ms. Carrelli's headline, "Why I choose to stay home," denotes that she actually has a choice, not a mandate. Choice is a good thing, something women have had for oh, maybe 40 years or so.

Ms. Carrelli (or maybe she prefers Mrs.) complains that society does not value the contribution of stay-at-home moms. And, yes, she is correct in concluding that the measure of society's value is shown through working conditions and remuneration, even in the form of tax breaks. Think about this: Does society value nurses? Does society value teachers? Does anyone notice a common thread here? Let's not devalue the contribution of stay-at-home moms by pressuring them into believing it is the ideal and only choice for women.

Feds reject asylum bids by Guatemalans

Carlos Siguenza remembered the threatening letters left at his home in Guatemala in the late 1980s, when the country was embroiled in a 36-year civil war that left about 200,000 dead. "Join the guerillas or be killed," he said, quoting the anonymous messages. When he didn't comply, several men tried to shoot him, he said.

Siguenza fled to the United States, followed two years later by his wife, Elizabeth, and their two children. They applied for asylum in the early 1990s and were issued work permits and Social Security numbers.

Now, federal officials want to deport them and thousands of other Guatemalan refugees after denying their asylum claims. Authorities have determined there is no longer a threat because the Central American nation's war ended a decade ago.

"We bought a house and have been making a life here for 15 years," Elizabeth Siguenza said.
