Talmage Clements: The Teacher
A quarter-century ago, developing nuclear power plants offered a historic opportunity for a young engineer, a professional thrill akin to launching the nation's space program. In his 32 years with Progess Energy, Talmage Clements worked on developing the control-room simulator at the Shearon Harris plant in Wake County, analyzed nuclear fuel safety, supervised nuclear engineers and oversaw the preparation of nuclear license applications. It was not uncommon for other companies to try to recruit Clements for his expertise and experience. But he never wavered from his goal: Stay at one company, live close to home, and don't lose your way in the management maze and get away from hands-on engineering."Why would you want to do something you don't enjoy for a whole lot of money?" Clements said. "Not many people get to work on their hobbies for a living."It took Clements just a few days to conclude that he was financially secure enough to retire at the end of 2005, at 58.
Artist Spotlight: Eve Strella of Pittsford
Evolution as an artist: My father, Robert M. Johnston, earned his living as a professional artist, and my brother, sister and I all have what I call the "art gene." I work at my art at every opportunity and usually take art supplies and always carry my digital camera with me when I travel, just in case something inspires me. Inspiration: Inspiration comes from nature, color, landscapes, topical settings and generally from things of beauty. I'm never sure what will inspire me until I see it. Then I can't paint, draw or photograph fast enough.
Featured work: The Road Home, colored pencil, inspired by a photograph I took of the lane leading to the farm where I grew up in western Pennsylvania. The beauty and color drew me in, and the level of detail sparked my interest and creativity.
Digital home seen boosting PCs; price an obstacle
From high-end PCs to gaming microchips and data storage equipment, scores of product categories stand to gain from the arrival of the long-awaited, long-hyped, digital home.
This year at CES, the biggest U.S. show of its type, PC makers Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. displayed digital homes at the show using their computers, monitors, printers and TVs.
The companies have turned to calling the PC a "home server," the hub of a network of wirelessly connected devices sending Internet video, high-definition movies, TV programs, music, photos and documents from one room to another.
Even computer disk drive makers such as Seagate Technology and Japan’s Hitachi Ltd. see opportunity in consumer electronics as high-definition video, photos and music require ever-greater amounts of data storage.

The Texas A&M Softball Field was frozen over and icicles were hanging from the padding behind home plate Tuesday, but the Aggies were still able to get in a practice session.

It was pointed out to head coach Jo Evans noted that the start of softball practice always seems to bring out the worst in the weather, " I know, and that's what everyone says, it must be softball season it it's snowy and rainy and cold. It's unfortunate, but what a teriffic opportunity to use the indoor facility and throw a bit and we have our indoor cages and it puts a little wrinkle in to it, but it's no big deal."
The Aggies return 12 letterwinners from the 2006 squad that went 34-19 overall and 11-6 in Big 12 action.

The modern State is a social service State, wrote late Appadoira in his work, The Substance of Politics. If this assertion is stretched to our contemporary world, it means that, even if you choose to commit suicide, it is the responsibility of government to stop you from dying. So, you do not even have the liberty to take your own life! It is the legal duty of the state to nurture you in health from infancy to adulthood and to ensure that your life finds full expression in comfort and happiness till you finally pay the debt of nature.
